Generative AI is currently the most talked-about technology in the professional world, and for good reason. Unlike older AI that simply sorted data, Generative AI creates something brand new. Whether it is a poem, a piece of digital art, or a line of computer code, this technology uses Neural Networks—systems inspired by the human brain—to construct original content.
For students, this is the ultimate brainstorming partner. When a student uses a “prompt” (a specific set of instructions) to generate an image, they are acting as a Director. The AI is the crew that executes the vision. However, the 10/10 way to understand this is to realize that the AI is using “Probability” to create. It knows that after the word “Once upon a…” the word “time” is the most likely next step.
For school principals, Generative AI represents a shift in how we grade. We are moving away from asking “Can you write an essay?” and toward “Can you guide an AI to write a brilliant essay and then fact-check it?” This requires a high level of Critical Literacy. Students must learn that while the AI can generate the “clay,” the student is the sculptor who gives the work its final shape, meaning, and heart.
Pro-Tip for Students: The quality of the AI’s work depends on the quality of your prompt. Be specific! Instead of “Draw a dog,” try “Draw a golden retriever wearing a space suit in a neon-lit cyberpunk city.”
Discussion Question: * If an AI paints a picture based on your words, who is the real artist: you or the computer?
